DIY Bathroom Baskets - Create Your Own

October 8th, 2008 at 18:35:28 by Christina | 7 Comments | Add Comment

My mother made these baskets for the bathrooms at my sister's wedding, but they could just as easily be used for a flower girl or for a shower. They take very little time to put together and no sewing is required.

She bought 1 yard of polyester satin on 39th Street in the garment district as well as 2 white baskets with handles and plastic liners on 28th Street in the floral district.  She made the paper flowers that you see on the basket handles out of crepe paper and stamens that she found at Tinsel Trading Company. Martha Stewart loves this store and so do we!  If you're not handy at making things, store-bought flowers with a twist wire will work just as well. The satin fabric is simply cut in half and wrapped neatly around the plastic liner; then it is secured on the bottom with tape (scotch or masking).  The flowers are twisted around the handles and a strip of tulle (about 2"x12") is used to make a bow that will cover the wire. You can cut the ends of the bow on the diagonal where you think it looks best.

For the bathrooms, we filled the baskets with hairspray, spray deodorant, bandaids, tylenol, an emergency sewing kit, safety pins, breath mints, etc. The baskets could be filled with rose petals for a flower girl as well.  Another idea is to put a small potted plant, like violets or white impatiens, in the basket and use it as a table decoration. These baskets are simple to put together yet add an elegant touch!
