I like the idea of our guests signing on a photo mat. Is there a certain type of pen that I should use? And where to go to find it?

 Thanks!

If the paper you're using is shiny/glossy, you will need a permanent marker that won't smudge. But as long as the paper you'll be using for writing is matte (ie not shiny), then you could use almost any type of pen as long as it is in a thickness that will be conducive to writing messages. Your best bet might be to go to an art supply store- in NYC, someplace like AI Friedman, Utrecht Art Supply, or Pearl Paint- and look for those pens labeled for writing. Choose a few in the colors you want (metallic can look good too) & aim for 1.0mm thickeness. If the size of the mat is small relative to # of guests who will be signing then you could choose a finer point (0.5mm). Check with the salesperson to be sure the pen is made for this use, and in an art supply store the person in the department will be knowledgeable.

Make sure the mat is made of acid-free paper so that the color won't fade / yellow over time.

I found the coolest photo frame guest books at weddingstar.com. You can get the matte engraved with your names and wedding date on it. When the guests sign their name, they use a special pen that etches their names onto the frame so it won't fade over the years.
